Coffee fights Alzheimer's, it fights against prostate cancer, breast cancer, and the high level of anti-axidents keeps your health in the green. But now, you can add another thing coffee fights: skin cancer. According to a new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists have discovered how caffeine can protect against certain skin cancers by changing sun-damaged cell's gene activity. In the study, mice with genes enhanced with caffeine were exposed to high levels of UV and the caffeinated mice were less likely to develop tumors. "All of this suggests the possibility that caffeine, possibly [applied to the skin], would have an inhibitory effect on sunlight-induced skin cancer," said Conney.
Key words: applied to the skin! This is one case were ingesting the coffee doesn't give you the protection. We wouldn't be surprised to see caffeine appearing in sunscreen in the very near future. Keep an eye out for it!
