Commonly abbrevated as I.C., interstitial cystitis is a long term chronic inflammation of the bladder wall. These inflammations are offten very painful and cause frequent trips to the bathroom. It can affect both men and women, but it tends to be more common in women. There are competing theories on its development ranging from gentics, to autoimmune, to nerve damage, and leaky bladder. However what is agreed upon is that diet can help control flair ups. In 2007, a study done at Long Island University reported that over 90 percent of interstitial cystitis patients experience an increase in symptoms when they consume certain foods and beverages, especially coffee, tea, soda, alcoholic beverages, citrus fruits and juices, artificial sweeteners and hot pepper.
Again, the common thread here is the level of acid found in these items, coffee being the highest. And as you can probably guess from our previous entries, our coffee, thanks to its low acid levels are safe to consume if you have I.C. In fact, our decaf. is approved by the I.C. network!
